What is Psychotherapy? How does it work? Psychotherapy is sometimes refered to as a 'talking cure', based on the belief that talking in confidence to a skilled helper helps us to gain insight and understanding of our problems. The therapist will use their experience and training to enable the patient to understand themselves more clearly and handle their difficulties more constructively. What is the difference betwen psychotherapy and counselling? There is no universally agreed difference, but often 'counselling' is used to refer to a shorter term arrangement that concentrates on current problems, whilst psychotherapy refers to a process that also explores past issues or enduring psychological difficulties. As a psychodynamic psychotherapist I am trained to work with deep seated emotional problems that may take time to resolve. ![]() |
